Most likely business coach will focus on helping a client develop their soft skills, such as leadership, problem-solving, communication, flexibility, and effective time management. Hard skills, which are technical competencies you usually learn in high school, in a certification program, or on the job.
This distinction is important in terms of coaching. Excelling at soft skills is what sets leaders apart from doers. Working with a coach to improve your soft skills will help you step fully into the Chief Executive role (or into the role of the effective business owner, in case you have inherited that business, for example). Rather than working in your business, like an employee, you will learn to work on it, like the visionary CEO.
It should be noted, that the mastery and subsequent excellence of soft skills is possible exclusively in case when the business leader possesses a significant amount of hard skills (or at least has a solid idea of the peculiarities of running a business, or of the subject field in which inherited business operates). It depends exactly on the coach, how quickly the client overcomes the distance from the state at the time of primary contact with the coach, to the shaped personality of a business leader, who is able to lead the company and have authority among management in accordance with his personal and professional qualities and skills, instead of formal ownership rights to the business in question.
